Deceptive Billing Hidden Behind a Trusted Name
Let me save you some time and money: this isn’t the Mayo Clinic you think it is.
The Mayo Clinic Diet is actually operated by a third-party company called Digital Wellness, which handles all subscription billing and customer support. The name may say “Mayo Clinic,” but what you’re dealing with is a marketing operation wrapped in medical branding, with deceptive billing practices and almost no accountability.
The diet itself was fine — nothing special, but not terrible either. Unfortunately, it’s buried under a mountain of confusing terms, surprise charges, and customer-unfriendly policies.
Here’s what they don’t make clear until after they’ve charged you:
- No refunds beyond a narrow 3-day “cooling off” period — and that doesn’t even apply to monthly plans (which most people choose).
- If you want to cancel a long-term plan early, they make you “downgrade” to a shorter plan and pay the difference in monthly pricing — essentially charging you more to leave.
- Auto-renewals happen without any notice. You don’t get a reminder, just a receipt after they’ve already charged your card.
- Canceling auto-renewal requires logging in and manually disabling it at least one day before your renewal date. Miss the window by a few hours? Too bad.
- Customer service is slow, rigid, and basically scripted to say: “You agreed to the terms.”
Everything about this feels like it was built to trap people into recurring charges, all while hiding behind the legitimacy of the Mayo Clinic brand. But make no mistake — Digital Wellness is the one profiting here, and they’ve made the terms deliberately confusing to do so.
It’s disappointing, misleading, and absolutely not what I expect from something associated with a world-renowned medical institution.
Avoid it. Read the fine print. And don’t be fooled by the name.

They won't let you cancel
I just signed up today for the program but I decided to cancel. When I went to do that under the settings, it said it would still charge me every month for the next year and that I could cancel the auto-renew for March 28 2026. I do not want to do this program. I want to cancel and get a refund. I haven't even done it a full day and there doesn't seem to be a way to cancel until a year is up. That's ridiculous.
UPDATE: The three day cool down period in Mayo's response is not true. I was emailed the following message from their customer service, "A refund will not be issued as per our cancellation policy"
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: I sent screenshots of the response from the Mayo Clinic Diet team to this review to the customer service rep I was emailing with, and I can confirm that the refund has hit my account today.

Determined to Succeed part 1
Lost five pounds week one following the diet (almost religiously-substituted prunes once as I ran out of banana) and the exercise routine (have to admit for this 70 year old, it was challenging but I did it (albeit with a few adjustments in how - wall sits OMG I could only do 30 sec. at a time).

Success that will last a lifetime!
What makes the Mayo Clinic Diet so great? Well, mainly, it works! I've never been so successful AND had it last--I've lost 65 pounds so far, and I know that I will reach my health goals if I follow the program. It's based on science, and it has all the elements needed for lasting change. Things that have helped me the most are 1) how the program started at the beginning--making sure that I was actually ready to change, 2) the importance of small changes and how each step helps, 3) the support from the Facebook group--oh, it's so important! When I began the Mayo Clinic Diet at the end of November (weighing-in at 292 pounds), I was informed that -- if I truly engaged with the program -- in four months I could lose 36 pounds, and that I could reach my goal of 190 pounds in ten months. Now in early March, my weight is fluctuating in the 257-254 pound range, with the 36-pound goal more or less in hand. I am quite optimistic that in the autumn my weight will be fluctuating in the 185-195 range.
One useful approach in this diet is a definite structure and set of easily-implemented routines combined with a relatively open and flexible attitude, grounded in a sense that reality is marked both by complexity and fluidity. Attention is given to our ability to shape and alter the habits which help determine how we live. An extremely helpful array of resources is provided. This includes videos and webinars, meal plans and recipes, suggestions and encouragements, as well as fairly easy-to-use tools for structuring and tracking what we consume, how we exercise, and how all of this impacts what we weigh.
There is no rigid quest for perfection here, but an understanding that we can be mindfully engaged in a process (with ups and downs) that helps us shape our lives and bodies in positive ways. Especially helpful is the blending of a science-based approach (balancing food groups, understanding how the body works, etc.) with the nurturing of one's ability to become more of what we want to be.
